The Franklin half dollar was struck from 1948 until 1963. It features colonial patriot and inventor Benjamin Franklin on the face and the Liberty Bell on the back. By law, this coin had to show an eagle as the symbol of the United States. But being a bit of a revolutionary, Franklin thought that the wild turkey and not the eagle should be our national bird. So out of respect to him, it was made very small.
