France’s famous 20 Francs Gold Angel was minted from 1871 to 1898, but the design by sculptor Augustin Dupre dates back to the days of the French Revolution in the late 1700’s. The winged guardian angel represents the spirit of liberty and freedom; it is protecting the French Constitution, which was established during the Revolution. The small Gallic Rooster in the background later became the very symbol of France. The reverse shows the denomination surrounded by the French motto of independence, “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.”The Angel has long been considered a “lucky” coin and was sought after throughout Europe as a good luck charm. French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte even believed in the “lucky” Angel and always carried one with him.
