In 2005, the United States Mint introduced a new finish for coins in the official U.S. Mint Set. The finish is known as “Satin Finish” and gives the coins a distinctive new look that is unique to coins in the Mint Sets. Previously, coins in Mint Sets had the same finish as regular-issue Brilliant Uncirculated coins issued for circulation. This coin is the 2005 Kennedy Half Dollar from the official 2005 U.S. Mint Set – the first-ever Kennedy Half Dollar with the “Satin Finish.” The only way to acquire one is to break open an official 2005 U.S. Mint Set – the coin is not available individually from the U.S. Mint. The finish is achieved by sandblasting the face of the coin dies with a fine mixture of sand and glass beads.
