Like all official coins of the British Commonwealth, the obverse design is a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin design was approved by Buckingham Palace.

The reverse depicts three dolphins. Known as the "Friends of the Sea," dolphins are among the most beloved of all marine animals. They are renowned for their intelligence, playfulness, and ability to communicate. Dolphins are found in all seas and oceans in the world, including the Atlantic Ocean around Tristan da Cunha.

Each Gold Dolphin coin is struck in 1/20 ounce (1.5552 grams) of .999 Pure Gold and has a legal tender face value of One Crown. It is the first Gold Crown in Tristan da Cunha history, as well as the first to feature dolphins.
