• As President, he secured the Louisiana Purchase and sent the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the West.
• The coin was designed by Felix Schlag, who won a national competition and received a $1,000 prize.
• The obverse depicts a portrait of Jefferson based on a 1789 bust by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon.
• The reverse shows Jefferson’s home at Monticello in Virginia.
• These coins are never seen in circulation because they were made exclusively for collectors in very limited editions.
• There are 10 coins; they were struck in .750 copper and .250 nickel. Dates are random.
