• The Statue of Liberty Half Dollar was struck by the U.S. Mint in 1986.

• The coin was issued to commemorate the statue’s 100th anniversary.

• The obverse shows the Statue of Liberty.

• The reverse features an immigrant family arriving in New York.

• This was a limited edition coin made only in 1986, over 20 years ago.

• This coin is richly layered in 24-karat gold.

• Gold-plated coins were not available from the U.S. Mint, because the U.S. Mint is unable to layer coins in gold.

• This coin was privately layered in 24-karat gold. 

• Just a tiny fraction of all Statue of Liberty Half Dollars were set aside for this special edition.

• It is much scarcer than the regular coin.

• The Statue of Liberty was designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi.

• It was given to the United States as a gift from the people of France to celebrate American liberty and freedom.

• The framework of the statue was built by Gustave Eiffel, who also built the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

• The statue was dedicated by President Grover Cleveland on October 28, 1886.

• Today, the Statue of Liberty is the world’s greatest symbol of freedom.

• There is one coin;  it is .750 copper and .250 nickel bonded to a core of pure copper.
