• The first Jefferson Nickel was minted in 1938 to honor Thomas Jefferson.

• Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and was 3rd President (1801-1809). 

• As President, he secured the Louisiana Purchase and commissioned the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the West.

• The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag, who won a national competition and received a $1,000 prize.

• The original obverse from 1938-2004 depicts a portrait of Jefferson based on a 1789 bust by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon.

• The obverse portrait changed in 2005.

• The reverse shows Jefferson’s home at Monticello in Virginia.

• This roll includes 40 coins in original Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

• Each coin in this roll was minted in 2004 or earlier and features the classic original portrait of Jefferson.

• Dates are mixed, and there may be some duplication.

• Coins were struck at Philadelphia (P mint mark to the right of Jefferson’s portrait on coins minted since 1980, but no mint mark on coins minted in 1979 or earlier) and Denver (D mint mark).
