The collection includes one U.S. Lincoln Penny coin from each year of the 1940’s – 1940 to 1949.

This was the era of World War II, and each coin is a Lincoln Penny with the coveted “Wheat Ears” reverse design.  The 1940’s was the last full decade in which this design appeared on the coin.  In 1943, the U.S. Mint made Pennies with steel instead of copper in order to save copper for the war effort.  Copper was vital for shell cases, bullets, and other essential items.   The 1943 steel Penney is the first and only steel coin in U.S. history.  In 1944 -1946, Pennies were made with copper that was recycled from old shell cases. The shell cases were gathered from battleship and battlefields and shipped back to the Mint to be made into coins.   All coins are over 60 years old and disappeared from circulation long ago.
