To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. issued a commemorative $1 coin and $2 bank note in 1976.  This collection brings both seldom-seen items together in a custom display.

• The $1 coin was a special one-time-only issue in 1976. It was the first circulating commemorative Dollar coin.

• The obverse includes the portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower that first appeared of Dollar coins in 1971.  It also features the dual dates “1776 • 1976” to span the 200 years since the Declaration of Independence.

• The special reverse design depicts the Liberty Bell and the Moon to symbolize 200 years from the era of the American Revolution to the era of space travel.

• The $2 bill is America’s first and only commemorative bank note design.  It was originally issued in the Series of 1976 for the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

• The front features the portrait of Thomas Jefferson, who wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and served as America’s third President from 1801-1809.

• The back depicts the painting “The Signing of the Declaration of Independence” by John Trumbull.
