1880’s Morgan Silver Dollar

The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of America’s most sought-after classic coins. It was the favorite silver coin among “Wild West” settlers, outlaws, and prospectors alike because of its large size and massive amount of pure silver.

The Morgan Silver Dollar was first made in 1878, and this coin was made just a few years later in in 1880’s.  It is among the earliest coins ever made.

Every Morgan Silver Dollar from the 1880’s is now over 140 years old.

This was the largest silver coin made for circulation in the 1800’s.  It is an immense 1-1/2 inches in diameter and contains over 3/4-ounce of pure American silver.

It was struck in 90% silver, a level of silver not seen in circulating coins for half a century.

The obverse portrays Liberty wearing a slave’s cap (an ancient symbol of freedom), while the reverse features a heraldic eagle holding both the olive branch of peace and arrows of war.

Most Morgan Silver Dollars were worn out or damaged in circulation, and more than half of all coins have been melted for the precious silver.  Just a fraction have survived for today’s collectors, and they are becoming harder to find with every passing day – especially in the nice collectible condition of this coin.

The 1880’s was a time when electricity was only just starting to make an impact on American life and was available in only a few wealthy homes … and an era before automobiles and airplanes. Among the greatest historic events of this pivotal decade in American history were the “Shootout at the OK Corral” in Tombstone, Arizona; the opening of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show; the dedication of the Statue of Liberty; and the admission of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Washington to statehood.
