The U.S. Mint produced a special commemorative Half Dollar more than 20 years ago in 1991 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the completion of Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Carved into the granite mountain face, Mount Rushmore features the heads of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Each head is about 60 feet high.

Mount Rushmore was completed on October 31, 1941, and is one of the nation’s most famous monuments.

The Mount Rushmore commemorative Half Dollar was made only in 1991. In addition to the regular coin, the Mint also made a limited-edition Proof.

Proofs are the highest quality coins. Each coin is carefully struck at least twice under extremely high pressure on a specially polished coin blank. The result is stunning three-dimensional designs and mirror-like backgrounds.

The obverse shows Mount Rushmore, while the reverse features a buffalo.

This coin is independently graded and certified as Proof-66 (on a 70-point scale).  This is one of the highest grades known, and the coin is almost flawless.

The coin is encapsulated in a special tamper-proof holder that protects the coin and forever certifies its grade.
