2021 Tortoise - Giants of the Galapagos 1 Oz. Silver

The Giants of the Galapagos Islands series showcases a variety of unique creatures found in the Galapagos Islands. Each are considered giants in their own right!

Made in 1oz of pure silver legal tender, this third coin in the series shows the Galapagos Tortoise, preceded by the Giant Seahorse and the Whale Shark. These creatures are so giant they wouldn't fit on a coin and had to be extended to give each coin its own unique larger than life shape!  

The Giant Tortoise of the Galápagos Islands is comprised of 15 large tortoise species. Many of these shell-backed giants routinely tip the scales at nearly 900 pounds! The largest of these impressive creatures was a fellow aptly named Goliath who was more than 4 feet long, three feet wide, stood two feet tall and weighed 920 pounds. They’re also one of the longest living creatures on earth, with a life span often reaching more than 100 years!

Each coin is individually serialized, housed in a custom capsule and packaged in a display.

A very low mintage of only 2,500 pieces.

Struck in an ounce of 0.9999 silver, the reverse of the coin portrays a fairly accurate depiction of this magnificent sea creature. The obverse of the coin includes an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as this is issued for the Solomon Islands.  It features a colorized Tortoise, its head and feet exceeding the boundaries of the circular portion of the coin.
