The first Native American Dollar was struck in 2009 as a replacement for the Sacagawea Dollar. A new coin has been issued every year since then, and this collection includes each of the coins, 2009 to 2024, and a common obverse.
Each year’s coin features a unique reverse design to celebrate a different aspect of Native American history and culture.
The 2009 reverse design honors the traditional Native American agricultural method known as “three sisters;” 2010 is a tribute to the 1400’s Great Law of Peace; 2011 highlights the 1621 Wampanoag Treaty; 2012 features Native American trade routes; 2013 honors the 1778 Treaty with the Delawares; and 2014 represents Native American hospitality towards the 1804-1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition. The 2015 commemorates the contributions of the Kahnawake Mohawk and Mohawk Akwesasne communities to “high iron” construction work and the building of New York City skyscrapers. The 2016 commemorates the contributions of the Native American Code Talkers in World War I and World War II. The 2017 features Sequoyah, inventor of the Cherokee Syllabary. The 2018 design celebrates Jim Thorpe, while the foreground highlights his achievements in football and as an Olympian. The theme of the 2019 Native American $1 Coin design is American Indians in the Space Program. The theme of the 2020 Native American $1 Coin design is Elizabeth Peratrovich and Alaska’s Anti-Discrimination Law. The theme of the 2021 Native American $1 Coin is American Indians in the U.S. Military. The 2022 Native American $1 Coin honors Ely Samuel Parker, a U.S. Army officer, engineer, and tribal diplomat, who served as military secretary to Ulysses S. Grant during the U.S. Civil War. The theme of the 2023 Native American $1 Coin is: Maria Tallchief and American Indians in Ballet. The theme of the 2024 Native American $1 Coin is the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924.
All coins display the common obverse - Sacagawea, the Native American guide who accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition on their quest to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. Sacagawea was the first identifiable Native American to be featured on a circulating U.S. coin.
Each coin was issued in limited quantities and is in original Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
All Native American Dollars minted since 2012 have been unavailable to the general public but were made available only to collectors. As a result, it can be hard to assemble a complete collection of all coins issued from 2009 to 2024.
The coins are golden-colored and have lettered edges (year of issue, mint mark, and “E Pluribus Unum”).
The set of sixteen coins is encapsulated in a deluxe display case that protects the coins and preserves their Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
