First, 50th and Bicentennial JFK Half Dollars 1

In 1964, the U.S. Mint introduced the Kennedy Half Dollar as a tribute to John F. Kennedy. It replaced the Franklin Half Dollar, and it also became the last 90% silver Half Dollar ever made for circulation. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar is a key U.S. coin because it was the first Kennedy Half Dollar as well as the only Kennedy Half Dollar issued in 90% silver for circulation. The portrait on the obverse was first used on Kennedy’s official Presidential Medal struck by the U.S. Mint. Jacqueline Kennedy, the President’s widow, personally approved the coin design. The reverse depicts the Presidential coat of arms.
To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 1976, the U.S. Mint issued a set of three one-time-only commemorative coins: Quarter, Half Dollar, and Dollar. These were the first circulating commemorative coins in U.S. history. The obverse of each coin is similar the standard coin, but with the dual bicentennial dates “1776-1976.” The reverse of each coin was a special bicentennial design that can never be used again. The Kennedy Bicentennial Half Dollar shows Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.
In 2014, the U.S. Mint produced a limited edition of Kennedy Half Dollars in Uncirculated condition at both the Philadelphia and Denver mints. The 2014 Kennedy Half Dollar was not released into circulation but was made exclusively for collectors in a limited edition.
