Four Decades of Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollars 1

Silver Half Dollars were once part of American coinage – but silver coins disappeared generations ago, and circulating Half Dollars are now a long-forgotten memory. This unique collection features the four decades of the fabulous Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar that was struck from 1916-1947.

The Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar replaced the Barber Silver Half Dollar in 1916. It is considered one of America’s most beautiful coins. The obverse depicts Lady Liberty wrapped in a U.S. flag and walking towards the rising sun. The reverse shows a magnificent eagle with its wings stretched.

This was America Half Dollar from World War I through the “Roaring Twenties,” the Great Depression, and World War II. Each coin was struck in the beauty of .900 fine silver and is a genuine piece of American history.

The four coins in the collection are as follows:
• Teens (1916-1919) – one of the first coins in the series. Coins from the teens were struck during the World War I era and are now at least 85 years old.
• Twenties (1920-1929) – a coin from the “Roaring Twenties.” Very few coins were actually struck in this era. In fact, the U.S. Mint made Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollars only in 1920, 1921, 1923, and 1927-1929. This is the rarest decade of Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollars (i.e., fewer coins were made in the 1920’s than in any other decade).
• Thirties (1930-1939) – a coin from the Great Depression. This was an era when few people would have even seen a Half Dollar coin.
• Forties (1940-1947) – the World War II era. The last Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar was made in 1947. It was replaced with the Franklin Silver Half Dollar in 1948.

All four of these classic silver coins disappeared from circulation generations ago, so they are rarely seen today. What’s more, most coins were worn out or damaged in circulation, leaving just a fraction in collectible quality like those in this collection.

Each coin contains over 1/3 ounce of silver bullion – and millions of coins were melted for the precious silver in 1979-80 when silver reached a record $50.35 an ounce … leaving even fewer coins for today’s collectors.

The set of four historic Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollars is displayed in a custom box.
