1837-1873 Liberty Seated Silver Half Dime

The Liberty Seated Silver Half Dime was Americas five-cent coin in the mid-19th century. It was first struck in 1837 and was last minted in 1873.

This was the last Half Dime coin; the five-cent Nickel was introduced in 1866 and eventually replaced the Half Dime. The coin was designed by Christian Gobrecht, who became Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint in 1840.  Gobrecht was one of the most famous coin designers in U.S. history.

The coin was struck in the beauty of .900 silver. The Liberty Seated Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar were struck at the same time and feature similar designs. The obverse shows Liberty seated on a rock.  Liberty holds a Union shield in one hand and a liberty cap (a symbol of freedom) in the other.  The reverse has a wreath and the denomination. 

Most Liberty Seated Silver Half Dimes were worn or damaged in circulation, and millions of Liberty Seated coins have been melted over the years for the silver, just a tiny fraction of the original coins have survived for todays collectors.
