During the Civil War, the Confederate States of America issued its own paper currency as an alternative to United States currency.
The Confederate $20 bill featuring the state capitol building in Nashville, Tennessee was first issued in late 1862 and was last authorized by the Confederate government in early 1864. In addition to the building, the front also shows a portrait of Confederate Vice President Alexander H. Stephens. The back is blue. It features the denomination and elaborate designs.
As proof of its authenticity, each Confederate bill was hand-signed and -numbered by Confederate officials. At the end of the Civil War in 1865, all Confederate currency was demonetized, and much of it was destroyed. Only a fraction survived, and those in Very Fine condition or better are the most treasured.
This is an authentic piece of Civil War history that is now over 155 years old. It is protectively encapsulated and comes with a description of the designs and a history of Confederate currency.
