Before becoming president, Harry S. Truman served as a captain in the U.S. Army field artillery in France during World War I. His experience in The Great War made him intimately aware of the suffering of soldiers under fire. As a result, one of his greatest concerns as a wartime president near the end of World War II was to conclude the hostilities as quickly as possible while sparing as many men as he could. Truman is also remembered for his 1948 Executive Order integrating Americas armed forces.
