5 DECADES OF S MINT PROOF HALF DOLLARS 1960’S – 2000’S

The San Francisco Mint started minting Proof coins in 1968;  previously, Proof coins were made at the Philadelphia Mint.  Proofs are the highest quality U.S. coins.  Each coin is struck multiple times under high pressure to bring out the three-dimensional designs and mirror-like background.  Due to the painstaking minting process, Proofs are limited editions.  Proof coins are never released into circulation but are made exclusively for collectors.  The coins are not available individually from the Mint but only in official U.S. Proof Sets.

This collection includes one Proof Kennedy Half Dollar from each decade it was struck at the San Francisco Mint.  All coins from San Francisco feature the coveted “S” mint mark.  The “S” mint mark appears above the date on the obverse of the coin.  There are five coins – one from the 1960’s, 1970’s, 1980’s, 1990’s, and 2000’s.  The 1960’s coin is dated 1968 or 1969 and is one of the first-ever Proof Kennedy Half Dollars struck at the San Francisco Mint.  The 1960’s coin was struck in .400 silver.

The Kennedy Half Dollar was first minted in early 1964 to honor President John F. Kennedy.  The portrait of Kennedy was approved by Jacqueline Kennedy, the President’s widow.  The other side features the Presidential coat of arms. 

Each coin is protected in a clear capsule and the set is displayed in a custom case with a Certificate of Authenticity.
