The Eisenhower Dollar was America’s last large-size Dollar coin ever minted for circulation. It was minted only from 1971-1978 and it is a treasured piece of American history. In addition to coins made for circulation, the U.S. Mint also made a small quantity of proof coins in 40% silver that were released only to collectors – and the finest of the silver coins were made only from 1971 to 1974 as proofs. The 40% silver proof coin was made only at the U.S. Mint in San Francisco and was made in smaller quantities than any other Eisenhower Dollars. A Proof coin is the highest quality from the U.S. Mint and it is very different from a regular coin. It is struck at least twice on a specially polished coin blank, and it is struck at a very high pressure. The result is sharp, three-dimensional designs and a distinctive mirror-like background. The obverse of the coin features Dwight D. Eisenhower, the World War II hero and U.S. President from 1953-1961. The reverse is an adaptation of the official Apollo 11 mission patch; it shows an American eagle landing on the Moon, with the Earth above its head. Apollo 11 in 1969 was the first manned mission to the moon, and Eisenhower was President when NASA was established in 1958.
