40% Silver JFK Mint Mark Collection

In 1964, the U.S. Mint introduced the 90% silver Kennedy Half Dollar as a tribute to President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963. Starting in 1965, the U.S. Mint stopped making 90% silver coins. Dimes and Quarters were made in copper-nickel, but the Kennedy Half Dollar was made in 40% silver until 1970. The 40% silver Kennedy Half Dollar was the last silver coin and the only 40% silver coin ever made for circulation. The coin was made at all three U.S. Mints then in operation: Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco and this set includes all three of these coins for a complete mint mark collection. Philadelphia made the coins only in 1965-1967; they have no mint mark and were produced in circulation quality. The U.S. Mint in Denver made the coins, also in circulation quality, only in 1968-1970; these coins have the D mint mark on the obverse above the center of the date. The U.S. Mint in San Francisco also made the coins only in 1968-1970; these coins bear the S mint mark. All coins struck at San Francisco were produced as limited edition proofs, so they are the highest quality possible from the U.S. Mint. These coins were not made available to the general public but were originally available only in special Proof Sets. Starting in 1971, the Kennedy Half Dollar was made in copper-nickel. The 40% silver coins have been out of circulation and unavailable from the U.S. Mint for up to 50 years. Huge quantities of silver coins including 40% silver Kennedy Half Dollars have been melted through the years for the precious silver, leaving just a fraction for todays collectors. Each coin is a classic in its own right, and together these coins represent the complete mint mark set of the first and only 40% silver coins ever issued for circulation. They are rarely seen, especially in a single collection like this.
