The Lincoln Penny was first minted in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Since 1909, there have been 10 different types of Lincoln Pennies, and this collection features all 10 coins.  The obverse of all coins features a portrait of Lincoln by sculptor Victor D. Brenner. It was the first circulating U.S. coin to feature a real person instead of Lady Liberty.

The first coins from 1909-1958 feature the legendary Wheatback design.  During World War II, the U.S. Mint made Lincoln Pennies in steel in 1943; it is the only steel coin in U.S. history.  From 1944-1946, coins were made with copper recycled from used World War II artillery shells.

The Lincoln Memorial reverse was introduced in 1959, and the coin was made in two different metal compositions.

The four 2009 coins were the first commemorative Pennies in history. They commemorate the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth, and each coin represents a different aspect of Lincoln’s life.

The final Lincoln Penny design is the Union Shield reverse, first minted in 2010 to symbolize Lincoln’s quest for national unity during the Civil War.

Together, these 10 pennies represent a treasure trove of American history.

The collection is presented in a Coin Wallet with narrative about the design and history of the coins.
