Raising the Flag - Iwo Jima Collection

Iwo Jima was one of the greatest events of World War II.   When U.S. Marines secured the island on February 23, 1945, they raised the U.S. flag atop Mt. Suribachi in celebration of an event that was captured by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal.   The capture of Iwo Jima was a turning point in the war. It helped speed the end of the war just a few months later. This collection features an official U.S. commemorative Silver Dollar issued in 2005 to mark the 230th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps.  A stamp that was issued on July 11, 1945, to commemorative the U.S. Marines securing the island of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945, during World War II and sand that was taken from a beach at Iwo Jima.

The coin is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, and the stamp is in Mint condition.  The Silver Dollar features Rosenthal's image of the flag-raising on Iwo Jima. The reverse depicts the official emblem of the United States Marine Corps showing an eagle, globe, and anchor.  The stamp was issued less than five months after the Marines took Iwo Jima. It also features Rosenthal's photograph, and it was printed in forest green to match the color of Marines uniforms.   The sand is certified as genuine and as coming from a beach at Iwo Jima. This is the first time that an actual piece of Iwo Jima has been included in an Iwo Jima coin and stamp collection.

Together, the Silver Dollar, postage stamp, and sand create a moving tribute to the brave Marines who secured Iwo Jima and helped bring World War II to an end.
