Silver Specimens

Until 1964, silver was a major component in dimes, quarters, and half dollars. Due to the rising cost of silver, the U.S. Mint stopped issuing 90% silver coins for circulation in 1965, although the Kennedy Half Dollar continued to be made in 40% silver until 1970.

This collection features four classic, seldom seen U.S. silver coins.

The Kennedy Half Dollar, which honors President John F. Kennedy, was made in 40% silver from 1965 to 1970. This is the only 40% silver coin ever made for circulation, as well as the last silver U.S. coin made for circulation and the largest circulating silver coin since the last Peace Dollar was made in 1935.

The Washington Quarter was first struck in 1932 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. It was made in 90% silver until 1964.

The Roosevelt Dime was first struck in 1946 following the death the previous year of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was last issued in 90% silver over 50 years ago in 1964.

During World War II, the Jefferson Nickel was made in 35% silver to help save nickel for the war effort. It was the only silver nickel in history, but it was last made over 70 years ago.

Over the past 50 years, untold millions of classic silver coins like these have been melted to recover the precious silver bullion, leaving just a fraction for today’s collectors. It is increasingly hard to find even one of these silver coins, let alone the set of all four coins.
