The First Decade of S Mint Proof Coins

The San Francisco Mint is renowned for the quality of its coins. This is a complete denomination set of Proof coins from the San Francisco Mint, from the Penny to the Half Dollar from 1968 to 1977.

All Proof coins since 1968 have been struck at the San Francisco Mint and feature the coveted “S” mint mark. Proofs are the highest quality coins struck by the U.S. Mint. Proof coins are made for collectors and are not released into circulation.   Each coin is struck multiple times under high pressure to bring out the three-dimensional designs and mirror-like background.  Due to the painstaking minting process, Proofs are limited editions. The coins are not available individually from the Mint but only in official U.S. Proof Sets. Proofs are highly sought-after because of their beauty and scarcity.

There are five coins in the set (Penny, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar). Composition is 95% and 5% zinc (Penny) or 75% copper and 25% nickel (all other coins). Dates will vary from 1968 to 1977; no specific dates are guaranteed.
